A place of spiritual practice for Saint Athanasios the Athonite, founder of the Great Lavra Monastery, the Zygos Monastery, is surrounded by fortification walls with ten different towers.
During the 11th century, Zygos was one of the most important Athonite monasteries, but was deserted probably due to pirate raids; after the redefinition of the boundaries of Mount Athos, it remained outside its administrative borders, which is why it currently admits women as well.
In this peaceful location, visitors will have the opportunity to admire the cells, the bakery and the wine press, attesting to a traditional, hard-working lifestyle lost in the depths of time.
