The Archaeological Museum of Polygyros was designed by Dimitris Fatouros and first opened its doors to the public in 1971.
Initially, it included a 200 m² exhibition hall that displayed representative objects from Chalkidiki, but had to be expanded when the antiquities – many of them unique – discovered over time outgrew their original premises.
The exhibition is organized into four thematic sections: Place and History, Prehistoric Societies, Historical Periods and Collections and Donations. Chalkidiki is represented by finds from its most important prehistoric settlements and cemeteries, while visitors can also admire select exhibits from the Roman period, including funerary statues and stelae, all displayed in the Historical Periods hall. The notable Lambropoulos Collection holds pride of place in the Collections and Donations hall.
The Museum experience is enhanced by various multimedia applications: an interactive map / timeline tracing the history of Chalkidiki through sites of particular archaeological interest; interactive applications focusing on the history of archaeological research and written sources citing important events in Chalkidiki; a digital screen dedicated to Stageirite philosopher Aristotle; and 3D projection mapping vividly reconstructing archaeological excavations.
