Ancient Thyrrheio appears in the political scene during the course of the 4th century BC as the occasional seat of the Acarnanian League.
Perched on the slopes of the Acarnanian mountains, the forests and caves of the region provided fertile ground for the development of a cult of the Nymphs, who are depicted on a marble relief on show at the Archaeological Museum of Thyrreio.
The Museum also houses a noteworthy collection of artifacts, including a significant number of sculptures and inscriptions, as well as funerary offerings recovered from the cemeteries of the ancient city and other settlements in the region.
