The Archaeological Museum is accommodated in the hospitable Municipal Cultural Centre of Lefkas.
The exhibits, dating from the Palaeolithic to the Late Roman period, originate from Lefkas and the surrounding islets.
The exhibition is organized in four thematic galleries: public and private life, the deities of Lefkas, funerary customs and prehistoric Lefkas. Through its exhibits, the Museum offers unique insight into both the public and private lives of the inhabitants of Lefkas in antiquity, as well as on the general economy and the region’s trade relations, which experienced significant growth.
Finds from public, rural and domestic sanctuaries, as well as from the island’s numerous caves, attest to the religious practices of the inhabitants of Lefkas, which was an important Corinthian colony. It’s worth noting that its fleet took part in both the Battle of Salamis and the Battle of Plataea.
One of the Museum halls is dedicated to the German archaeologist Wilhelm Dörpfeld, who, in search of Homeric Ithaca, excavated important sites all over the island in the early 20th century.
