Palaeros is located in the northwestern section of the Plagia peninsula.

According to some, the peninsula was not only an island in antiquity, but was also sometimes identified with Homeric Ithaca. The ruins of ancient Palaeros are protected by one of the best-preserved fortifications in Aetolia-Acarnania, which in places reaches a height of 12m.

Admission is free on March 6, April 18, May 18, the last weekend of September, on October 28, as well as on the first and third Sunday of each month between November 1 and March 31.
