The most important city of Chalkidiki during the Classical period was none other than ancient Olynthus, located east of the present-day settlement and built on two natural hills, characteristic of the surrounding landscape.
Olynthus became the capital of the Chalcidian League in 432 BC, when inhabitants from many coastal settlements converged there, serving as the region’s most important economic and military center, until Philip II of Macedon destroyed it in 348 BC.
The city was systematically investigated and a large part of it was unearthed, significantly enriching our knowledge of daily life in Late Classical Macedonia. Olynthus was organized in city blocks according to the Hippodamian urban planning system and equipped with a well-organized water supply system.
