The Holy Monastery of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary at Torniki stands on a low hill near the river bank of the Aliakmon, a stone’s throw from the village of Panagia (Torniki) in the Grevena region.
The establishment of the Monastery is associated with the renowned Byzantine Tornikios family. The two-storey katholikon is all that survives of the complex. In 2011, it was relocated approximately 140 meters uphill, to protect it from flooding caused by the construction of a PPC hydroelectric dam. The monument is entirely covered in brilliant murals, which, according to surviving inscriptions, date to 1481 on the lower floor and to 1728–1730 on the upper floor. Combined with a breathtaking landscape and panoramic views, the Monastery offers visitors a truly unique experience.
