The mansions of Siatista, with their complex architectural design and the murals that often cover all of their interior surfaces, constitute a Macedonian tradition that looks like something out of a fairy tale.
The Maliogas-Argyriadis mansion was built in 1759, during a period when Siarista flourished commercially, although no one really knows who the original owner was. In 1844, it passed into the hands of Dimitrios Argyriadis, one of the most important 19th century scholars and educators, who renovated the mansion to facilitate the needs of his own family.
He also commissioned the lavish decoration, with vibrant murals adorning both the interior and exterior walls of the mansion. A variety of geometric patterns, flowers, plants, animals, hunting scenes, and even entire towns, unfold before the visitor’s astonished eyes. Among them, the depiction of the city of Frankfurt (based on an engraving by Johann Friedrich Probst) and the portraits of Tsar Nicholas I of Russia, Rigas and King Otto definitely stand out.
