Popularly known as the Kasteli of Roumeli, Castle of Antirrio is a real regional landmark.

It was originally built by the Ottomans around 1500 in almost record time, pretty much simultaneously to the Fortress of Rio on the opposite side, at a strategically significant location where the distance between Central Greece and the Peloponnese is at its narrowest.

The much sought-after Castle has a hexagonal ground plan reinforced by polygonal corner bastions. Rebuilt in 1533, it was repaired on several occasions later on, becoming a point of contention throughout its long history, both by the Ottomans and the Venetians.
