According to myth, the city of Calydon was founded by the eponymous hero, son of Aetolus.
It was mainly known for the legendary hunt of the Calydonian Boar, led by the hero Meleager and the amazon Atalanta. The ancient city and its Aetolian king, Thoas, are mentioned by Homer in the Iliad as having taken part in the Trojan War with forty ships.
Driving down the Antirrio-Ioannina Motorway, you are bound to go past the theatre of ancient Calydon, located outside the town’s fortifications, whose main characteristic is its unusual square shape. Lafrio, a renowned local sanctuary dedicated to Artemis and Apollo, is located on a nearby hill.
