The Museum was founded in 1981 through a donation from the Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation; with the ingenious use of photographs, models and interpretive material, it offers a vivid tour of the history of Andros from the Neolithic period to the Venetian rule.

Notable are the finds from the Geometric settlement of Zagora, while funerary and votive reliefs, alongside fragments of statues dating to the Hellenistic and Roman periods are also on display. The Museum’s most celebrated exhibit is the famous Hermes of Andros, a Roman copy of a 4th-century BC sculptural type attributed to Praxiteles.

The panorama of archaeological finds from medieval Andros is rounded out by carved architectural reliefs from the island’s ecclesiastical buildings, coats of arms and other works of art dating back to the Venetian rule (16th century). The Museum also houses one of the best-preserved surviving copies of Rigas Feraios’s Charta.
