Prosforios Tower, Ouranoupoli: A Byzantine refugee haven

The Prosforios Tower is located next to the Ouranoupoli port and is the largest and best preserved tower in Chalkidiki.

Formerly a dependency of the Vatopedi Monastery, it most likely belonged to a larger building complex. In 1924, the Tower sheltered refugees from Asia Minor after the population exchange, while in 1928 it was inhabited by Sydney and Joyce Locke, who revived the art of weaving in Ouranoupoli, providing refugee women with an additional income strand.

The varied structure of the Tower is due to the fact that it was completed in three different phases: Byzantine, Ottoman and modern. On the ground floor, visitors will find an exhibition featuring antiquities from Chalkidiki, while the upper floor is dedicated to the Ouranoupoli refugees and the Lockes, who provided inhabitants with humanitarian aid for 50 years.
