The Archaeological Museum of Kea is located in the traditional settlement of Ioulida and houses finds from the island’s earliest archaeological investigations and excavations, particularly those conducted at Karthea and at the prehistoric settlements of Kephala and Agia Irini.

The Museum also displays sculptures, architectural members and inscriptions dating from the Archaic to the Roman periods, originating from the four ancient city-states of Keos: Ioulida, Koresia, Poiessa and Karthea, whose conservation programme was honoured in 2017 with the Europa Nostra Award.

Among the Museum’s most remarkable exhibits are the large clay statues known as the Ladies of Kea, made by a local workshop. They were discovered in the fortified prehistoric settlement of Agia Irini and date back to the 15th century BC.

The Ladies of Kea depict standing female figures wearing long garments and garlands around their necks and were originally painted, as was customary. Fragments of at least fifty such clay statues have been identified so far.
