Palaeros is located in the northwestern section of the Plagia peninsula.
According to some, the peninsula was not only an island in antiquity, but was also sometimes identified with Homeric Ithaca. The ruins of ancient Palaeros are protected by one of the best-preserved fortifications in Aetolia-Acarnania, which in places reaches a height of 12m.
