According to evidence, human habitation and activity was confirmed on the island of Skyros, situated almost at the heart of the Aegean Sea, between the Sporades and the Cyclades, Euboea and Lesvos, as early as the Early Neolithic period.
On the northeastern coast of the island, archaeologists have excavated a fortified prehistoric settlement, known as Palamari, located on Cape Kastraki, in Palamari Bay. In large part the settlement is still preserved in good condition, covering an area of approximately 17 stremmata (1.7 hectares). It was built on a low hill with a maximum elevation of 19.49 m above sea level and is enclosed by a strong fortification wall reinforced with successive horseshoe-shaped towers.
The continuous and uninterrupted occupation of the site from the Early Helladic to the Middle Helladic period is demonstrated by successive phases of construction and reconstruction of the fortification wall and the buildings, the spatial organization, the rainwater management and the abundance of well-preserved pottery from all corresponding phases.
Its geographical location, urban planning and especially its robust fortifications with horseshoe-shaped towers – a characteristic feature of settlements engaged in the metal trade – attest to its crucial role in the Bronze Age copper exchange networks, prompting archaeologists to conclude that Palamari is one of the most important prehistoric settlements of the Aegean.
