Kozani once had more than 100 mansions, of which very few have been preserved.
The Grigorios Vourkas mansion – one of the oldest in Kozani – is currently the only 18th century specimen of urban Macedonian architecture that is open to visitors.
Erected in 1743, it took three whole years to complete the elaborate decoration of the house, which is organized around an inner courtyard known as “empati”. The upper floor, traditionally used during the summer months, has preserved the ornate wooden ceilings, decorated with murals in the familiar Ottoman style.
