The building housing the Archaeological Museum of Kimolos was bequeathed by Eliza Vafia in 1965.

It primarily displays finds unearthed during the excavations of the ancient city of Kimolos, as well as objects recovered through surface surveys and lucky finds from locations all across the island.

The Museum’s collections span a broad chronological range, tracing its history through the centuries. Rich in volcanic rocks, Kimolos has preserved its ancient name, long associated with the renowned kimolian earth, a fine white mineral clay used in medicinal and cosmetic preparations, as well as for everyday purposes – since antiquity.

Obsidian and flint tools, along with pottery fragments recovered from various parts of the island, attest to human activity on Kimolos as early as the Late Neolithic period (c. 5300–4500 BC). Other important finds date to the Early Cycladic I period (c. 3200–2700 BC), while shreds of imported Mycenaean pottery discovered at Ellinika indicate the presence of a Mycenaean settlement on the island during the 14th and 13th centuries BC, which may have developed into a significant Mycenaean centre in the 12th century BC.
