Ancient Kassopi is an important mainland city of Epirus that preserves many elements of its urban layout and its impressive fortifications.
It is a rare example of architectural harmony, with evenly spaced, technologically advanced houses with a sewage system, a water supply network and exceptional public buildings, which reveal a high standard of living and elevated aesthetics.
Situated on a natural “balcony” on the slopes of Zalongo, at an altitude of 650m, with a healthy climate and excellent vistas of the Ambracian Gulf and the Ionian Sea, it boasts a unique location. The Theatre of Kassopi, with its impressive polygonal masonry, is ideally oriented, demonstrating that ancient Greek theatres were not just a place where you watched a performance, but a space for mental and physical exaltation in direct visual contact with the lifegiving sea.
The geometric perfection of the Katagogion, the town’s market, rivals all other public buildings; finally, it is worth mentioning that the southwestern end of Kassopi houses the sole example of a Macedonian-type tomb in all of Epirus.
