The Archaeological Museum of Karpathos is housed in the west wing of the Eparcheio, an elegant structure built during the Italian rule.
It houses finds from Minoan sites in southern Karpathos, the Minoan/Mycenaean settlement of Pigadia and the island’s ancient cities of Karpathos (mostly likely located at present-day Aperi), Arkeseia and Vrykous.
Also noteworthy are the sculptures and other finds from the island’s Early Christian basilicas (including a reconstruction of a chancel screen), as well as from its Byzantine settlements. The interior is dominated by the 13th century wall painting depicting the Deesis, which originates in the ruined church of the Holy Apostles.
The exhibition is complemented by texts on the island’s history, the topography of its ancient cities and maps drawn by travellers in the 15th and 16th centuries.
