The Archaeological Museum of Aigio is housed in the former Municipal Market building, constructed in 1890 and attributed to Ernst Ziller, although there is no written evidence to support this.
Its galleries house finds from excavations conducted in the city of Aigio and other ancient cities of the Aigialeia region, which formed part of Achaia during historical times. It was home to several important cities, including Helike and its successor Aigio, as well as Aigeira, Keryneia, Rhypes and Pellene, which, together with the cities of western Achaia, formed the Achaean League.
The exhibition favors the linear presentation of important finds from the Neolithic, Mycenaean and Geometric periods, right through to the Roman era, arranged into separate sections, offering visitors insight into major historical developments that shaped the society and artistic production of the region. The marble statue of Zeus Aigiochos is among the Museum’s most important exhibits.
