The Archaeological Museum of Milos is located in Plaka and has been housed in a neoclassical building known as Katastimata (“Shops”) since 1984, donated by the Municipality of Milos.

According to popular belief, the building was designed by renowned architect Ernst Ziller. The exhibition galleries showcase representative finds from various sites across the island, dating from the Neolithic period to Late Antiquity. In recent years, the entrance hall has been known to host temporary exhibitions.

Among the prehistoric exhibits, the finds from the Sanctuary of Phylakopi have pride of place – especially the impressive female figurine known as the “Lady of Phylakopi” (mid-14th century BC). Considered a masterpiece of Mycenaean art, its exceptional size and quality have led scholars to believe it was a cult figure.

Equally significant are the diverse exhibits illustrating life on Milos during the historical periods. These include funerary and votive stelai bearing inscriptions in the Doric dialect, among the earliest surviving examples of the Greek language (6th century BC). Also on display is a modern replica of Venus de Milo, a 1st-century BC masterpiece whose original is housed in the Louvre Museum.
