Overlooking the lush green plain of Imathia, the Archaeological Museum of Veroia is an exemplary specimen of architectural design.
Sharing a wealth of knowledge, the semi-outdoor sculpture gallery surrounds visitors with the history of the city – before they even step through the door. The so-called “Wall of Memory” is an open-air exhibition of funerary stelae and honorary altars strategically dotting the courtyard, narrating the portraiture, institutions and ideals of the ancient city.
This informal approach is ideal for students and families with young children, who need more space and time to absorb the history of the Macedonian kingdom.
In contrast to the laid-back atmosphere of the courtyard, the impressive statues of the Museum tend to have the opposite effect, captivating visitors with their size and beauty. A gigantic Medusa head – once placed on the ancient walls of Veroia to repel enemies – welcomes visitors right in front of the entrance, while inside the Museum it is worth seeking out the imposing marble bust of the river god Olganos, borrowing the facial features of Alexander the Great.
