One of the oldest museums in Greece, the Archaeological Museum of Syros was founded in 1834.

Around 1900, it was relocated to the Town Halll, designed by the renowned architect Ernst Ziller. It holds finds from all over the Cyclades, the ancient town of Syros, the iconic Early Cycladic settlement of Kastri – one of the most important centres of the so-called Early Cycladic culture (c. 2400/2300 – 2100 BC) – and the famous necropolis at Chalandriani.

The Museum displays Early Cycladic pottery – including the characteristic depas amphikypellon – alongside figurines and metal artefacts, attesting to the advanced culture of the period. One of its halls is dedicated to the great archaeologist Christos Tsoundas, researcher of Greek prehistory, with photographic material, diaries and objects from the excavations he undertook on the island.

The collections also include Byzantine sculptures and inscriptions, offering valuable insight into the history and society of Byzantine Syros.
