As towers are a typical feature of the indomitable culture of Mani, it is no coincidence that the Byzantine Museum of Areopolis is housed in a 1821 tower and a 1850 tower house.
The exhibition is primarily based on archaeological material. In the first section, finds from the large basilicas of Gytheio, Kainipolis and Tigani, as well as 11th and 12th-century architectural sculptures from churches introduce visitors to the issue of the Christianization of Mani.
Wall paintings and icons, ecclesiastical books, dedicatory inscriptions of devout Maniots, as well as church objects and liturgical vessels used in religious rituals dating back to the Byzantine and Post-Byzantine periods, populate the second section of the exhibition.
