The Byzantine town of Fanari was of particular strategic importance, as was derived from an 1289 imperial chrysobull where it was apparently mentioned.
It appears frequently in various sources throughout the 14th century thanks to its important position along a communication route between Epirus and Thessaly.
It boasts a small hilltop fortification rising above the town, covering an area of approximately 2.5 hectares, and is reinforced by six projecting towers. The fortification encloses the ruins of various buildings – among them two cisterns – brought to light during restoration works at the castle carried out by the local Archaeological Service.
