The Archaeological Museum of Karystos is located on the eastern side of the town port, almost directly opposite the Venetian tower of Bourtzi. It is essentially part of the Giokaleio Foundation, housed in the left wing of the building.
The exhibition presents finds from the region of ancient Karystia, corresponding to the territory of the city-state of Karystos and its domain during the Classical period, as well as finds from Styra, in southern Euboea. Wall texts, paired with the explanatory label accompanying each exhibit, provide visitors with comprehensive information about the historical evolution of the city and the wider region through the centuries.
The main gallery includes sculptures, architectural fragments, funerary reliefs and inscriptions from the Classical, Hellenistic and Roman periods, originating from the area of Palaiochora, the heart of ancient Karystos, dating from the Late Classical period (400–323 B.C.) to the Roman era (31 B.C.–A.D. 324). The exhibition is enriched even further by finds from the harbor of Geraistos.
