Thesprotia boasts many an archaeological site, as well as a multitude of important monuments and finds, many of which are currently on display at the Archaeological Museum of Igoumenitsa.
The Museum’s permanent exhibition is organized across five thematic units: an archaeological – historical overview, settlements of the historical periods, public life, private life and funerary customs. The exhibits featured across all five units cover a long span of human presence and activity in the Thesprotian region, from the Paleolithic era to the Ottoman rule.
The Hellenistic period – when many of the large Thesprotian cities (Gitana, Fotiki, Elea, Doliani-Fanoti and others) were at their socioeconomic peak – is of especial importance. Among the various exhibits, the military equipment (a cuirass, a silver helmet, a sword, etc.) belonging to a prominent figure of the 4th century BC is certainly worth mentioning.
The informational material, including 3D scale models of ancient settlements and a variety of reconstructions (a residence, a bath etc) support the visitors’ holistic understanding of the exhibits, shedding light into the various aspects of life in Thesprotia.
