Dimini is the oldest and most idiosyncratic Neolithic settlement in Europe.
Its high walls – still surviving to this day – form six concentric circles that surround the entire hill in pairs. Local residencies were arranged around the central courtyard or in the gap between the pairs of enclosures and had shared courtyards.
The site was excavated with patience and perseverance during between 1886 and 2011, until the discovery of two imposing Mycenaean tholos tombs ultimately crowned this titanic effort with success.
