This lovely, two-storey neoclassical building, with its marble windows and the imposing staircase guarded by two lions, is reason enough to visit the Archaeological Museum of Tripoli.
Designed by celebrated architect Ernst Ziller, it was first used as a hospital in 1913 and inaugurated as the Pan-Arcadian Archaeological Museum in 1986. In its garden, funerary stelae peek out among the blooming rose bushes, reminiscent of a fairy tale setting.
A funerary stele greets the visitor at the entrance, with the inscription “Hail, Arcadia”, an ideal welcome to a place that traces the history of the whole of Arcadia from the Neolithic period to late antiquity: from the prehistoric Sfakovouni and the Mycenaean cemetery of Palaiokastro, to the powerful ancient towns of Mantinea, Tegea and Megalopoli.
