The Collection of Icons and Ecclesiastical Heirlooms of Pyrgos, Thera is housed in the Church of the Holy Trinity, founded in 1664 and reconstructed in 1975. It used to serve as the katholikon of a women’s monastery in the Venetian Kasteli of Pyrgos.
The Collection was curated after the 1956 earthquakes and features icons and ecclesiastical heirlooms from the churches around Kasteli and the wider Pyrgos area.
The icons date back to between the 16th and the 18th century and are the work of local painters active in the Cycladic islands, as well as renowned Cretan artists. Priests Emmanuel Skordilis and Victor, who produced most of their work in the second half of the 17th century, stand out among them.
The Collection is complemented by woodcarvings, such as crosses, tabernacles and an Epitaph – a stunning 19th century folk art specimen – as well as ceramics, icon screen fragments, liturgical books, ecclesiastical vessels, vestments and embroidery.
