The acropolis of Proerna overlooks the ancient city, located at the northwestern edge of Achaia Phthiotis, occupying the rocky hill of Gynaikokastro.
To the southeast of the city once stood the sanctuary of Demeter Proernia. The trapezoidal fortification wall was constructed during the Hellenistic period out of grey limestone and was reinforced by two rectangular towers.
The masonry and construction technique of the fortifications are associated with the successors of Alexander the Great, who competed for dominance in Greece at the end of the 4th and the beginning of the 3rd century B.C.
