The renovated Archaeological Museum of Schimatari debuted back in 2006.
Its permanent collection heavily relies on funerary finds, through which visitors can visualize the evolution of Tanagraean art over the centuries. It also happens to be a great way to learn about the history of the exhibits, the myths, cults and funerary practices they are associated with.
The inscriptions, authentic and vivid testimonies of the region’s ancient history, offer plenty of information about festivals, economic life, administration and the cultural and commercial exchanges with other areas. Recent research also offers new insights into the historical and monumental topography of Schimatari.
The Museum is housed in its original building, founded by the Archaeological Society at Athens in 1890. The exhibits displayed in the courtyard and the five galleries of the museum cover the period from prehistoric times to the early Christian era.
