One of the most impressive examples of the Knights Hospitaller’s fortifications in the Dodecanese, this 14th century coastal fortress was named after the numerous bitter orange trees (neratzia in Greek) in the area.

Neratzia Castle stands at the entrance to the port of Kos and is connected to the town by a stone bridge on Phinikon Avenue. It features two enclosures initially separated by a moat and flanked by towers and battlements, while architectural members from some of the town’s ancient and Early Christian buildings have been used for its construction.

Originally, the Castle stood on an islet, separated from the mainland by a water-filled moat, which has since been filled in and is now Phinikon Avenue. During the island’s Italian occupation, the Italian Archaeological Service removed the Ottoman additions, conducting extensive restoration to return the Castle to its original form.
