Archaeological Museum of Vathy, Ithaca: In the footsteps of Homer

The exhibition offers a novel interpretation of significant finds dating back to the Geometric and early Archaic periods (1000–700 BC) mainly discovered at Aetos on the island of Ithaca. The exhibition traces the emergence of an important religious center during the Early Iron Age and highlights the flourishing of the city-state, as well as Ithaca’s key position within an extensive network of trade, communication and exchange relations. This network is the key to the rapid development observed on the island in the late Geometric period and early Archaic era.

The Sanctuary of Apollo at Aetos is an early cult center of nation-wide fame and is undoubtedly connected with colonization and the development of communication and trade routes in the northern Ionian region and the West.
