Nea Plevrona, one of the largest fortified cities of Western Aetolia, is located only five kilometres away from Messolongi.
Mentioned by Homer in the Iliad, it was celebrated as one of the five Aetolian cities that took part in the Trojan War, occupying a place of honour in Aetolian mythology. The fortification walls, rising up on the edge of Mount Arakynthos, are an impressive example of military architecture, preserved to a remarkable height, with its gates and well-preserved towers still largely intact.
Nowadays, the fortification of the ancient city is better known as the “Castle of Lady Rini” and is associated with more recent myths and local traditions, originating in the Byzantine period. Among the city’s public buildings, the recently restored ancient Theatre stands out, offering magnificent views over the Messolongi lagoon.
