Oiniades was a fortified city that was especially significant to the Acarnanians.

It possessed two harbours, as well as several smaller mooring facilities, which gradually fell into disuse. Silting played a major role in their abandonment, as well as other major geological changes that gradually took place over the centuries in the delta region of the Acheloos River.

At the northern harbour, now inland, visitors can still see the ship sheds (neosoikoi in ancient Greek), an impressive large-scale structure designed to house six warships. Dating to the early 4th century BC, it is the best-preserved surviving monument of its kind.
