Just 1km from the beautiful traditional settlement of Kritsa, the three-aisled, vaulted Church of the Virgin Mary Kera owes its particular domed appearance to the fact that it was built over different periods.
The original church, i.e. the central aisle, dates from the 13th century and is dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, while the two side aisles, dedicated to Saint Anne and Saint Anthony were added in the 14th century.
The elaborate murals are equally emblematic, covering almost all interior surfaces with some of the most important examples of Cretan painting from different periods and in styles. Particularly noteworthy are those in Saint Anne’s aisle, executed with exceptional realism and expressiveness, including scenes from the apocryphal gospels of Mary, which were quite uncommon in Byzantine painting.
