The Museum of Byzantine Culture is listed as a historic monument and work of art, built according to the award-winning design of architect, painter and poet Kyriakos Krokos between 1989 and 1993.

Its eleven halls span aspects of Byzantine and post-Byzantine culture, presented through genuine exhibits mainly excavated in Thessaloniki, and broader Macedonia.. The permanent exhibition is enriched by environmental graphics and multimedia displays, offering information on specialist topics, like everyday life, art, commerce and handicrafts, which help paint a complete picture of the Byzantine Empire.

The Museum has fully equipped conservation laboratories and state-of-the-art archeological storage facilities, an education programs hall, outdoor activities space, a temporary exhibition wing, a multipurpose room, two amphitheaters, a gift shop and a cafe-restaurant. In 2005 it was awarded the title of “Museum of Europe” by the Council of Europe, an honor bestowed upon a Greek public museum for the first time ever.

Thanks to its broad spectrum of activities, as well as its scientific and publishing work, the Museum is considered an exemplary center of preservation, research and promotion of cultural heritage. Partnerships, a spirit of openness towards civil society, youth, persons with disabilities and marginalized social groups have transformed the Museum into a dynamic center of culture and education in the service of the public. An accessible, people-centric institution.
