The Bath-house of the Winds or the Hammam of Abid Efendi is the only surviving one of the three public baths that existed in Athens until the late 19th century. It dates to the first period of Ottoman rule (15th – 17th century) and remained in operation until 1965.

As an architectural structure, the Bath House underwent various alterations and additions over its long history. It consists of three main areas: the changing rooms, the warm room, and the hot room. The heart of the Bath House is the hearth with its water reservoir. Lighting is provided through circular skylights arranged in concentric circles.

Since 1998, when its restoration was completed, it has been under the administration of the Museum of Modern Greek Culture as a museum space. The use and architectural typology of the monument are showcased through the permanent virtual exhibition “At the Bath: A Journey into Body and Soul”, which immersively presents the practices of cleansing and beautifying the body through time.

Admission is free on March 6, April 18, May 18, the last weekend of September, on October 28, as well as on the first and third Sunday of each month between November 1 and March 31.
