Although very few traces remain, there was once a Byzantine town in Sitia that had probably been built over the ancient town of Iteia or Sitaia.
A unique remnant of a once glorious past, the imposing Kazarma looms over modern Sitia – only a fragment of the fortress built by the Venetians in the 13th century over the Byzantine remains. The fortress suffered several disasters – from the earthquakes of 1303 and 1508, and the raid of Barbarossa’s pirates in 1538, to almost being completely razed to the ground by the Venetians themselves, who abandoned any possibility of repairing it; its was completely remodelled during the Turkish rule.
Today, the restored Kazarma hosts dramatic performances and concerts during the summer months as part of the “Kornareia” festival, in honour of the great Sitian poet Vitsentzos Kornaros.
