Overlooking Volissos, this Byzantine castle, with its six circular towers, protected the northwestern part of Chios.

Although it was built in the 11th century, it was given its final form in the 15th century by the Genoese; its characteristic colour is due to the cupriferous local rock that has been used in its construction. Volissos Castle is also thought to have been the one-time residence of the poet Homer.
