The Archaeological Museum of Chalkis “Arethousa”, which opened its doors to the public in 2021, is housed in a listed heritage building that originally functioned as a distillery and spirits factory under the brand name “Arethousa” in the early 20th century.
The imposing industrial character of the building inspired the exhibition’s organization across three levels – ground floor, mezzanine and upper floor. The thematic exhibition of the new museum explores key aspects of political organization, economy, cultural identity and religious practice, showcasing seminal finds from Euboea and Skyros.
The museum highlights significant chapters in the history of Euboea, such as Skyros’s role in the trade and metallurgy in prehistoric Aegean; the prosperity of the Lefkandi settlement in 10th century B.C.; the colonial tendencies of the Euboeans and the spread of the Euboean alphabet to the West; the connection between Homeric epic and ancient drama with the Sanctuary of Artemis at Aulis; the prominence of Negroponte as a major Venetian center; the flourishing of Egriboz during the Ottoman period; and finally, the industrial development of the early 20th century.
