Hidden in a serene oak forest, the Late Minoan cemetery of Armenoi (13th – 12th century BC) was discovered in 1969, after two schoolboys came across two ancient vases in the area.
Since then, over 220 family chamber tombs have been uncovered, carved into the rock, as well as a single built tholos tomb. The majority of them had not been looted, thus presenting us with invaluable grave goods and impressively decorated larnakes, as well as important information concerning the people buried in them.
