The Archaeological Museum of Olympia is one of the most important museums in Greece, showcasing the centuries-long history of one of antiquity’s most glorious sanctuaries dedicated to Zeus and birthplace of the Olympic Games.
Designed by the architect Patroklos Karantinos, the Museum houses the remarkable finds from excavations in the sacred Altis of Olympia, spanning from prehistoric to early Christian times.
The museum is especially renowned for its sculpture collection and its exceptional assemblage of bronzes – the largest of its kind worldwide – featuring weapons, figurines, and a variety of artifacts. Equally remarkable are its important examples of ancient ceramic art.
The sculpture collection features masterpieces, such as the pedimental sculptures from the Temple of Zeus (depicting the myth of Pelops and the Centauromachy), the Nike of Paionios, and the celebrated Hermes of Praxiteles.
