The new building of the Archaeological Museum of Mytilene, located in the Kioski area – a prime example of modern museum architecture – features a permanent exhibition entitled “Lesbos from the Hellenistic to the Roman era”.
The exhibition includes sculptures and a collection of clay objects, as well as mosaic floors and wall paintings from the Hellenistic and Roman times, mostly originating from luxurious mansions that reflect how much the island flourished during that period.
The mosaic floors of the “House of Telephos” (1st-2nd century AD) stand out, as well as the mosaic floor of the atrium of the “House of Euripus” and the “House of Menander”, featuring a portrait of Menander, a bust of the Muse Thalia and a scene of Orpheus taming wild animals, dating back to the second half of the 3rd century AD.
