The Archaeological Museum of Komotini, designed by Aris Konstantinidis, reflects the philosophy of the great modernist architect, who saw buildings as “vessels of life” – though here, it is antiquities that take center stage.

Its permanent exhibition showcases objects from the wider region, spanning from prehistoric to Byzantine times. Most relate to aspects of both public and private life in the major Hellenic cities of Aegean Thrace.

The highlight of the collection is the golden bust of Emperor Septimius Severus (193-211 AD), once mounted on a pole carried by the imaginiferi (standard-bearers) of the Roman army.

Before leaving, visitors can relax in the museum’s shaded garden, displaying an array of outdoor exhibits. Among them, the marble sarcophagus decorated with scenes from the Labors of Heracles stands out as particularly impressive.
