The Acropolis of ancient Sparta used to be home to the administrative and religious center of the ancient city.
Nowadays, only remains of buildings are still in evidence, which served a variety of purposes, such as religious, public and private. These remains attest to the Acropolis being in continuous use from the Geometric period through to the Byzantine era.
The archaeological site is located north of the modern city and doesn’t just include the hill the Acropolis rests on, but also the elevation of Palaeokastro, which extends towards the east. Visitors can admire the Roman Theatre, part of the Temple of Athena Chalkioikos and traces of a stoa from the Archaic period.
The remains of another, monumental, stoa from the 2nd century AD are also worth visiting – the so-called “Circular Building” – as is the Middle Byzantine church located near it, traces of Byzantine structures, the basilica of Saint Nikon and the Late Roman fortification wall (3rd – 4th century AD).
