The “House of Mosaics” is a unique architectural site with a distinctive history that begins in the Roman Imperial period and continues to the present day.

The two mosaics, depicting the Abduction of Europa and Orpheus playing the lyre, are elaborate floors from two rooms of neighboring luxurious Roman villas. They were created in the second half of the 3rd century AD and at the beginning of the 4th century AD, respectively.

The construction of the two protective shelters at the end of the 19th century – a new peristyle building essentially housing the ancient mosaics – was crucial for their preservation. In 2020, as part of an exclusive donation from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, the site was redesigned and reopened to the general public.
