The acropolis of Leivithra was the heart of the ancient city and current archaeological site. It was also where Orpheus was born and buried, according to Greek myth.
Leivithra lies at the entrance of the large fold that separates Upper Olympus from Lower Olympus. The mountainous location was a risky choice, which was probably why it was destroyed and eventually abandoned, as described by Pausanias, surrounded by a landscape of incomparable natural beauty that still conveys the magic behind the myth.
