Elateia, GR Get Directions

Among the cities of Phocis, Elateia appears to have played a dominant role throughout history, thanks to its strategic location between northern and southern Greece and the control it exerted over the road axis connecting Thermopylae and Chaeronea.

The Archaeological Collection of modern Elateia exhibits finds from the ancient city, the Sanctuary of Athena Cranaia and various sites in western Locris, chronicling the Upper Paleolithic to the Sub-Mycenaean period.

Among the displays are a partial reconstruction of a Neolithic house and the layout of a Mycenaean chamber tomb, accompanied by grave goods discovered during excavations at local cemeteries.

From the historical periods, notable exhibits include a set of imposing female busts and theatrical masks from the cemeteries of Abai, Elateia and Tithorea.
